Man sentenced to death in Jaffna High Court

Jaffna High Court Judge S. Paramarajah Wednesday sentenced to death a man accused of abducting, robbing jewelry from and killing a young woman from Meesaalai in Kodikaamam in Thenmaraadchi, after nearly a period of eleven years since the case was first filed against him, sources in Jaffna said. The accused, held in Kandy Bogampara prison, was brought to Jaffna to face the trial.

The man sentenced to death is Ponnambalam Koneswaran, a resident of Meesaalai North, Kodikaamam.

The young woman killed by Koneswaran was Yogan Piriyatharsini, 23.

The case against Koneswaran had been inquired into in the magistrate courts in Jaffna and was transferred to Jaffna High Court by Sri Lanka Attorney General’s Department on 21 March 2007.

A sentence of 10 year imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 rupees or two years additional imprisonment on failing to pay the fine was passed on Koneswaran for the theft of jewelry.
