Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao Wednesday visited Trincomalee and held talks with the Chief Minister of the Eastern Provincial Council Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan and the Governor of Eastern Province at their respective offices. But her scheduled visit to Champoor in Moothoor East Wednesday was cancelled at the last minute. According to her program she was to meet uprooted people of Champoor now lodged elsewhere. The reason for the cancellation was not disclosed, Trincomalee sources said.
Later in the afternoon she visited the historic Trincomalee Ko’neasvaram temple where she handed over keys of a bus donated by India to the management committee of the temple.
Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka accompanied Nirupama Rao in the talks with the Chief Minister which lasted for fifteen minutes.
The Chief Minister requested the urgent assistance of India for the resettlement of displaced people in the province and insisted that the India should help them to construct houses for the resettled people.
Nirupama Rao briefed the press about the outcome of talks.
She said India would build new houses for the resettled people instead of repairing the damaged houses. India would provide new houses not only to the resettled in the North but in the East too, she said.
Later she met the Governor at the secretariat in Trincomalee where he briefed her about the resettlement and rehabilitation activities now undertaken in the Eastern Province and the ground situation of the province.
