Massive anti- 18th amendment protests

Massive protest campaigns against the proposed 18th amendment to the constitution have been organized by opposition political parties and pressure groups inside and outside parliament on September 8.

The UNP, JVP and Movement Against the 18th Amendment will launch protests starting tomorrow.

“The protest on the 8th is open to everyone. The UNP will commence its protest at 11 am from Sirikotha and join hands with other groups who are against the implementation of the 18th amendment. I think the JVP will also join the common protest on that day. So it will be massive and we hope to do this continuously until the government backs off,” UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said.

Meanwhile, the Movement Against the 18th Amendment which comprises various politicians and pressure groups will hold a massive protest at the Ayurveda Junction on September 8. “We have invited the UNP and the JVP. Meanwhile, UNP Deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya said that the UNP will protest inside parliament premises. The JVP has agreed that protests should be conducted with everyone’s participation,” said Keerthi Tennakoon, convener of the movement and Director of Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE)
