Sri Lanka economy grows 7.8 percent

Sri Lanka’s economy expanded by 7.8 percent in the first half of the year on a 12-month basis, official figures showed Thursday.

Growth was broad-based, but led by the industrial sector, which increased by 8.0 percent compared with the same period of 2010, the Department of Census and Statistics said.

The statistics office also said output from the fishing industry nearly doubled as the government relaxed fishing restrictions in the formerly war-torn north and east.
