Compensation not paid to uprooted families in Batticaloa district

Sri Lanka government has failed to pay compensation to the families uprooted from their homes in Batticaloa district due to Sri Lanka Army (SLA) 2006 offensives on places like Paduvaankarai who are languishing in the interim camps in Batticaloa town, Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian P. Selvarasa said. Though this matter had been brought to the notice of Sri Lanka Deputy Minister of Rehabilitation on several occasions no action has been taken by the minister, he added.

Sri Lanka government has failed to provide the uprooted families the needed basic facilities or means for rehabilitation even four years have passed after SLA has brought the Eastern Province under its complete control, the MP said.

More than one hundred thousand persons had been uprooted from their places with the destruction of their houses and properties due to aerial bombing and shelling. Whatever that remained was plundered by SLA and the paramilitary gangs operating with it, Selvarasa said.

A sum of 747 million rupees is needed for the rehabilitation of the uprooted families and though this has been pointed out in the district development meetings and coordination meetings presided by SL Ministers of Rehabilitation and Economic Development by Batticaloa district TNA parliamentarians so far nothing has been done, he added.
