UNP to campaign abroad for Fonseka’s release

Sri Lanka’s United National party (UNP) is to commence a large scale international protest campaign against the recent court martial decision which has ordered for the imprisonment of former army Commander Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Sarath Fonseka for three years over alleged arm dealings, during his time as commander.

The effort is to rally maximum support both in Sri Lanka and abroad demanding for the release of Fonseka. The first protest is scheduled to be held in Milan, Italy on September 26th, followed by similar protests in other countries.

The protest in Italy will also include a demonstration and a protest march demanding for the release of Fonseka. The protest will be led by UNP MPs, Jayalath Jayawardena, Wijedasa Rajapaksa and Akila Viraj, who will be in the European city at the time of the protest.

The UNP spokesperson said the party is hoping for articipation of a large number of Sri Lankans living in Italy to take part on the 26th.
