Wickremesinghe tells possible rebels to leave party

Sri Lanka’s United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has declared that all those parliamentarians who have announced that they will sit independently in parliament have to resign from the party and then take such a decision, the state-run Dinamina newspaper said. According to the article, Wickremesinghe has maintained that no one in the party can take a decision to sit independently in parliament while being part of the UNP and therefore they have to resign from the party and then sit independently in parliament.

“Any member from the party can resign and take their future course of action independently, and I will not be an impediment to such a decision, but they cannot take such decisions while being in the party,” Wickremesinghe was quoted as saying in the article.

He made these comments during the party’s parliament group meeting held at the parliament complex yesterday.

He informed that so far none of his party MPs have informed him officially that they have decided to sit independently in parliament.

He said that even though some MPs have made statements to the media saying that they are going to sit independently in parliament, so far he has not been informed officially by any of these parliamentarians about such a decision.
