SLA closes access road to resettled families in Vaadmaraadchi East

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna has closed Point Pedro- Maruhthangkea’ni road in Vadamaraadchi East where uprooted families from Kudaththanai and Raamaavil camps had been taken to be resettled. Recently, the road had been opened with great publicity by Sri Lanka government allowing public to use the road from 7:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m daily. But now SLA authorities have closed the road for public use. SLA and government officers, however, are permitted to use it, sources in Vadamaraadchi said.

More than two thousand persons resettled in Vadamaraadchi East recently are forced to use the circuitous way via Pazhai, Iyakkachchi, Puthukkadduch Chanthi to reach their places. The destitute families have to pay extra money to travel by this route.

Naakarkoayil SLA main base is located midway of Point Pedro-Maruthangkea’ni road which had remained closed by SLA fro the last fifteen years.

When SLA occupied Jaffna peninsula in 1996 a part of this area had remained under the control of Liberation Tigers.
