Civilian dies in accidental police firing in Batticaloa

A thirty-year-old civilian of Munaikkaadu in Batticaloa district died due to gunshot injuries Friday night while a team of police personnel went to Muthalikkudaa to arrest a suspect involved in arson. While members of the police team and two others in the area were engaged in a heated argument, the rifle in the hand of a police officer had accidentally gone off wounding the deceased, police sources said.

The wounded man was first admitted to Mahizhadiththeevu government hospital and later transferred to Batticaloa Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The name of the deceased is yet to be disclosed.
