“Thirumavalavan must resign as MP”

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan must resign as a Member of Parliament immediately and face people, demanded Karthi P. Chidambaram, All India Congress Committee (AICC) member, on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference at Chidambaram, he said Mr. Thirumavalavan, who got elected to the Lok Sabha with Congress support, should not have made undeserved comments against Congress leaders and party policies.

Mr. Thirumavalavan, in an interview to a Tamil bi-weekly, had questioned the credibility, strength and culture of the Congress, besides vehemently criticising AICC leader Sonia Gandhi and general secretary Rahul Gandhi, he said. (In the interview Mr. Thirumavalavan faulted the Congress for giving red carpet welcome to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the valedictory of the Common Wealth Games in New Delhi.) Mr. Karthi Chidambaram said that since Mr. Rajapaksa was the elected leader of Sri Lanka, India was well within its rights to invite him as official guest.
