2000 sq.kms in North remain to be de-mined – SLA

More than two thousand square kilometers (sq.km) of land in the Northern Province have to be cleared from land mines. About 1800 sq.kms have been cleared so far, Sri Lanka’s military spokesman Ubaya Madawela claimed.

However, he said the lands to be de-mined include farm lands and shrub jungles areas.

This has prevented resettled families to continue their livelihood activities without hindrance to their lives and properties.

About three hundred thousand landmines have so far been removed by SLA de-mining teams besides local and international de-mining teams now deployed in the North, SLA spokesman said.
