Rajapaksa’s trip only put off

Sri Lanka on Saturday denied reports in a section of the media that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had cancelled a proposed trip to United Kingdom and said the visit was postponed due to his busy schedule in November.

The External Affairs Ministry said Mr. Rajapaksa had a busy schedule of foreign visits recently to India, the United States and China. Besides, he was scheduled to take the oath of office and secrecy for his second term in November. As per a ruling of the Supreme Court, the second term of Mr. Rajapaksa is to begin in November as he had called the election two years ahead of first term.

“As such his proposed visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of the Oxford Union has been postponed, to a more suitable time, and the British authorities so informed.”
