Imelda says she discussed Ceasefire with Gotabhaya

Jaffna Government Agent (GA) Imelda Sukumar said Wednesday in a meeting in Jaffna Secretariat that Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa had consented to a ceasefire when she had held talks with him in Colombo during the August 2008 SARRC Conference but Liberation Tigers had rejected the offer missing the opportunity to create a peaceful atmosphere. Commenting on Jaffna GA’s latest statement, political circles in Jaffna said that Sri Lankan government servants and humanitarian workers or former LTTE members now in Colombo’s captivity could speak nothing but the version of the government.

The meeting was held to discuss ways to integrate the former Liberation Tiger combatants released after rehabilitation with the society.

Meanwhile, heated arguments arose in the meeting when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) intelligence unit personnel and soldiers were accused of harassing and torturing the released combatants who have to present themselves to sign in SLA camps daily or weekly. SLA does not permit them to leave the peninsula either, it was further accused.

Ms. Imelda Sukumar disclosed in the meeting that she had had talks for an hour with SL Defence Minister Gotabhaya Rajapaksa when she was in Colombo during the SAARC conference and that he had consented to enter into a cease fire agreement.

The Wednesday meeting presided by Imelda Sukumar was attended by SLA Rehabilitation Secretary, Vice-chancellor of Jaffna University, Divisional Secretaries, Religious dignitaries, SLA and police officials.

The issue of SLA harassment and torture of the released former Tiger combatants was discussed in length raising heated arguments.

It was also accused that the released combatants are treated with suspicion and are always under observation by the SLA creating a situation where they are unable to return to normal life.
