Fresh queries delay India-aided project in Lanka

Fresh queries by the Sri Lankan Attorney General about the conditions attached to the India-aided power project in Sampur in the Trincomalee district of eastern Sri Lanka are further delaying the construction of the 1,000 MW plant, a Lankan weekly reported on Sunday.

According to The Nation, the Ceylon Electricity Board is “surprised” that the Attorney General’s department, which has to clear the legal aspects of the joint venture (JV) agreement between the CEB and the National Thermal Power Corporation of India, has come out with queries on matters that had already been settled between the governments of Sri Lanka and India and included in the MoU they had signed in 2006.

In June, the AG’s office had raised some questions.

These were answered and the documents sent back immediately.
