Sri Lankan minister apologies over false claims of mediation in peace process – nepalnews.com

A Sri Lankan minister has apologised to the government of Nepal over the false claims made by a senior Sri Lankan minister that Nepal’s President Dr Ram Baran Yadav requested his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa to mediate in bringing Nepal’s peace process to a conclusion.

makune-sri_lankan_minister According to Sri Lanka Guardian news website, Deputy Ministers of External Affairs of Sri Lanka Neomal Perera during his recent visit to Nepal apologised to Prime Minister Nepal over the claims of his senior, External Affairs Minister GL Peiris.

Neomal Perera was in Nepal on a 3 day visit to attend the 3rd South Asia Economic Summit being held in Kathmandu from 17th December to 19th December 2010.

However, Prime Minister Nepal advised him to be wary of future false claims as this was not the first time it has happened and that it was not conducive to diplomatic relations between the two countries, either internationally or locally, the report said.

External Affairs Minister Peiris had repeatedly claimed that Dr Yadav requested Rajapaksa, during their meeting in Beijing a couple of months ago, for mediation in Nepal’s peace process.

Peiris had even defended his claim during a debate in the Sri Lankan parliament.
