India, Lanka ink MoU for ferry service

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on passenger transport by sea was signed by India and Sri Lanka here on Friday.

Signed by the Secretary to the Lankan Ministry of Ports and Highways Sujatha Cooray, and the Indian High Commissioner Ashok K Kantha in the presence of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the MoU will enable ferry services between Colombo and Thoothukudi, and between Talaimannar and Rameswaram. With mutual consent, passenger transportation by sea between the two countries will later expand to other ports. The ColomboThoothukudi service will be the first to commence, an official communiqué said.

A ferry service had existed between Rameswaram and Talaimannar. It was given up in 1982 due of the war in Lanka.
