“Crimes are taking place everywhere in the world. […] If you compare the crimes in the whole country to an elephant, what is happening in Jaffna is only a hair of that elephant’s tail,” said Sri Lanka Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne in the SL parliament Thursday, answering accusations brought out by Tamil National Alliance (TNA). Dismissing allegations, and explaining that alleged killings and abductions are suicides and elopements, Leader of the House, Nimal Siripala de Silva charged TNA that it was deliberately trying to draw a grim picture of the situation in Jaffna, to fulfil the vested interests of the Tamil Diaspora, Daily Mirror in Colombo reported Friday.
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe asked the government to crack down on what was happening in Jaffna. He said that ten killings had taken place between December 27, 2010 and January 3, and this was a serious development.
Had this happened in Colombo or Kandy, there would have been uproar. Today, the Tamil media is threatened. Not only the Tamil media, but also the Sinhala media is threatened, he said.
As a solution, the SL prime minister was harping on Colombo’s efforts to create a ‘spiritual society’ on the eve of Sambuddha Jayanti.
Meanwhile, commenting on the war crimes committed in the island, Sri Lanka’s permanent representative at the UN, Palitha Kohona said in an interview to Sunday Observer that allegations are always made by the losing side and its supporters.
“You cannot go around investigating every allegation. That is not the way the world operates,” he said.
“We should not think that the UN is there only to look at Sri Lanka’s affairs […] Sri Lanka’s issue is important for us but certainly not at the UN.”
“Being a very vibrant democracy, our newspapers vie with each other for sensational news on Sri Lanka and that is understandable. If you survey the international media, there is hardly any reference to Sri Lanka […] the lesser the reference it is better for us,” Kohona said in the interview last Sunday.
Commenting, a diaspora political observer said that like the naked emperor in the tales who wanted the people to appreciate his ‘attire’, the top people of genocidal Colombo, all naked in their agenda nowadays, insist that the world also operates in that way.
Perhaps Colombo is very confident about the ‘way’ it could sell out the resources of the island at its disposal, in order to bail it out and carry on with its genocidal agenda, the diaspora political observer further said.
In fact, a power having complicity in the war crimes, but talks of ‘home grown’ solution, now squeezes the necks of some Tamil leaders in its grip to denounce the territorial integrity of the Tamil country in the north and east of the island, informed circles in the island said.
