One dies, 5 reported missing, floods-displaced in Trinco rises to 60,000

The number of displaced persons and sheltered in 159 welfare centres in the Trincomalee district due to second wave of floods following heavy rains with strong wind stood Friday evening at 59,198 persons from 15,669 families. However, the total number of persons affected due to disaster comprises of 2,90,000 persons from 80,952 families, in eleven DS divisions in the district, district secretariat sources said.

Meanwhile five persons trapped in floods at Chittaa’ru village in Seruwila division are reported to be missing as a rescue boat operated by Sri Lankan military while in the act of rescuing sixteen persons had toppled, police said.

Two children, one woman and a male, said to be a sailor are reported missing.

Four Sri Lanka Army and two Sri Lanka Navy personnel were engaged in the rescue operation, Police said.

In another incident a 22 year-old employee at a bank was washed away by the floods in Thampalakaamam division when the Kalmetiyawa tank was opened to release the excess water to avoid a breach.

All the five are reported missing.
