Rajapakse’s son dismisses speculation over President’s health

President Mahinda Rajapakse’s son on Friday dismissed reports that his father was "ill", amid speculation that the Sri Lankan strongman had undergone cancer treatment in the US last month. "There are persistent rumours that His Excellency the President is ill. There is no truth in that. I am at

home with him and I would know if he is unwell," Namal Rajapakse said at a public rally in the country’s south.

The president flew to the US last month on a previously unannounced private visit which has triggered intense speculation about his health.

Namal, the country’s youngest legislator, said there was no truth in persistent rumours that President Rajapakse was seriously ill and needed cancer treatment in the US last month.

He accused opposition political parties of trying to create dissension with the ruling party.

The opposition is trying to create discord among the ranks of the government, but they will not succeed, Namal said, adding that the opposition should "get their heads examined."
