Gaddafi calls close ally Rajapakse

Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapakse in a telephone conversation urged Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi to ensure peace in his embattled North African state as soon as possible, a spokesman said Friday.

Gaddafi initiated the call to his close ally, Rajapakse’s spokesman Bandula Jayasekera said, declining to say when the conversation took place.

"The Libyan leader called the president," Jayasekera said. "The Sri Lankan president asked the Libyan leader to establish peace as soon as possible and safeguard the lives of the Libyan people."
