Tamil national activist attacked in London

Two unidentified men attacked Eezham Tamil nationalist R. Soosaipillai, known as Thanam, in front of his house in London Monday night. Mr. Thanam, a veteran activist, was one of the key persons who supported the successful re-mandate of Vaddukkoaddai Resolution in UK that democratically reaffirmed the Eezham Tamil aspiration for an independent and sovereign Tamil Eelam in January 2010. He served as a mobilisation coordinator in the British Tamil Forum (BTF) during the crucial time 2008 – 2010. Thanam, who once served the infrastructure of the Tamil national cause for 21 years, is also one who grasped the transition of the times with perception. The 47-year-old activist has been a force behind major Tamil public events in UK including the Heroes Day remembrances. In his capacity, he has always been in touch with the law and order agencies of UK.

Thanam_UK_1_92836_200  Thanam, contacted by TamilNet Tuesday evening, alleged that the attackers had the intention of killing him and that he was saved by his resistance and by the timely alert of his family members Monday night around 11:30 p.m.

He was attacked while he was taking out shopping items from the back of his car.

Thanam ducked the hard hit from behind on his head by a rod-like object, but it hit him on his arm. Another attack caused him an injury that needed 8 stitches.

As he fainted in between two cars, his family members raised an alarm and the attackers ran away.

Thanam recently inspired the founding of ILC Tamil Radio in London orientated as a community broadcast.

A couple of days before the attack, Thanam was ‘warned’ by some elements who told him that he should ‘fall in line’ with their political agenda.

While some ‘articulating’ members of the Eezham Tamil diaspora obsessed by the artfully blackmailing question of ‘unity’ see the ongoing events in the diaspora as merely involving personalities and factions, serious political observers who know what some World establishments are really up to in practice, perceive an international ‘dialectical process’ in handling the national question in the island of Sri Lanka.

While voices are raised strongly on one hand for universal justice, human rights, change of regimes and liberation of peoples and nations, for a section of forces cutting across establishments on the other hand, the paradigm of ‘counterterrorism’, aiming at opportunist corporate colonialism, is yet to be over.

Many world forces pouring money and deploying ‘diplomacy’ to strengthen the majoritarian, genocidal, Colombo-centric and military-controlled regime in the island; their reluctance to check the genocide and war criminals; their bold meddling in the island defying all universal values, and the continued terrorisation and victimisation of all Eezham Tamils spirited in their liberation ideology are not isolated events, political observers said.

Tamil circles in London said that they expect the British police to act in not only nabbing the culprits but also in exposing the remote hands, if any, operating in terrorising the Eezham Tamil diaspora in London.

The Colombo regime and a section of its abettors have openly declared ‘war’ on the diaspora of Eezham Tamils, the Tamil circles alleged.
