Four Tamil medium schools have been brought under the administration of newly carved out Sinhalese dominated Trincomalee North Education Zone which has its office at Gomarankadawela. Four Tamil medium schools are located in Morawewa (Muthalik-ku’lam) DS division and had been under the Trincomalee education zone till the end of March this year till the creation of a new Sinhala education zone
Tamil medium teachers of these schools now find very difficult to correspond with the new education office where all members of staff are Sinhalese and workshops and training classes for them are conducted in Sinhalese medium.
Sinhalese officials assigned in the new education zone are unable to go through their personal files that are maintained in Tamil language in the Trincomalee education zone office and are unable to recommend increments, salary increases and promotions in time. All circulars are issued only in Sinhalese, Tamil medium teachers complain.
The new zone is the fourth one in Trincomalee district and is named as Trincomalee North Education Zone bringing all Sinhalese medium schools in Morawewa, Gomarankadawela and Padaviya located in the northern part of the district.
As the number of schools designated was not enough for the creation of a new zonal office the provincial education ministry that is dominated by the Sinhalese since the de-merger of the North-East province decided to transfer the four Tamil medium schools from the Trincomalee education zone that is administering ninety nine percent of Tamil medium schools.
Kantha’laay education zone is for Sinhalese medium schools in Kantha’laay and Seruwila DS division that administer all Sinhala medium schools in the southern part of the district.
Trincomalee district has been currently divided into four education zones, namely Trincomalee, Moothoor, Kantha’laay and Trincomalee North.
