‘EU parliament leaves justice to the indicted’

“The EP urges the Sri Lankan government to implement the recommendations suggested by the UN panel of experts and conduct a genuine investigation,” said the European Parliament press release Thursday, leaving the delivery of justice with the genocidal state of Sri Lanka indicted for war crimes by the UN panel report. Eezham Tamils also noted with a feeling of insult added to injury, the statement of the EU parliament that said that the war “ended with the surrender of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)”, where as to their knowledge the war ended with massacre and genocide abetted by many establishments including some of the member states of the EU tagged behind the USA.

The following is the resolution of the European Parliament appeared in its press release:

“Investigation needed into human rights violations in Sri Lanka

“Two years after the civil war in Sri Lanka ended with the surrender of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Parliament urges the Sri Lankan government to take active measures to protect the Tamil people so that they can look forward to "a bright and prosperous future, on equal terms with their Sinhalese fellow citizens".

“Following a recently published UN report which finds credible the allegations that both government forces and the LTTE conducted military operations with "flagrant" violations of human rights, MEPs call for a full, impartial and transparent investigation. The EP urges the Sri Lankan government to implement the recommendations suggested by the UN panel of experts and conduct a genuine investigation.”

On Belarus the EP called for wider EU sanctions against the regime to include targeted economic sanctions against state owned companies and on Azerbaijan the EP blamed the Azerbaijani authorities for increasing harassment and intimidation of journalists and political activists.

The soft-pedalling of EU parliament on genocidal Sri Lanka was widely expected after the US Asst Secretary of State Robert Blake, whose government set the trend for the genocidal war in the island closeted with the war-crimes accused SL Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, last week, and after the UK government in its statement didn’t specify who should conduct the investigations.

Many Eezham Tamil circles were repeatedly telling that the war crimes investigation that is not coupled with the recognition of the independence of Eezham Tamils would only help those who engineered the war and engineered the orientation of the panel report.

On Monday, SL presidential sibling Basil Rajapaksa, visiting Jaffna said that nothing will come out by supporting the UN Panel report and implied that the Tamils who support it are committing ‘treason’.
