Human skeletons found in ex SL military camp in Mallaakam

Following Judicial Medial Officer in Colombo confirming that the bone-remains recently found in the Mallkaakam Court complex in Jaffna belonged to human beings, further search was conducted Thursday in the dilapidated Court complex, which served as a SL military camp since 1996. Sri Lanka Police earlier claimed that the skulls found in a ruined well of the complex belonged to animals.

The old Court complex, which was used by the occupying military and was later abandoned, was recently cleared to build a new Court complex.

In addition to the skulls found in the well, further human skeletons were also found while clearing the building for laying foundation for a new building.

In the presence of the Mallaakam Magistrate Mr. S. Gajanithipalan, two JMOs of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital and SL Police from Thellippazhai conducted further excavation of the skeletons.

Even though the possibility of finding more human remains in the locality are suspected, the Court has not issued any specific order on further searches.
