Colombo alleged of engineering paramilitary clash in East

A special team of Sri Lanka Army personnel Tuesday afternoon conducted a search at the Batticaloa residence of Eastern Province Chief Minister S. Chandrakanthan alias Pilliayan. Mr. Chandrakanthan was not at his residence at the time of search operation. TMVP sources said the reason for the operation was not revealed by the army personnel. The search of Chandrakanthan’s residence, located along Lake View, is being viewed as the climax of the internecine fighting between the two paramilitary groups, which are operated by the Rajapaksa regime in Colombo. Informed sources in Colombo said that the Sri Lanka Army intelligence unit has been actively engaged in causing deep division between the two paramilitary groups.

Chandrakanthan’s personnel condemned the incident saying that such search operation should have been conducted under the normal law. The other group is led by Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna, who holds the portfolio of deputy resettlement minister.

During the war, Rajapaksa government supplied arms and other assistance to these armed groups to abduct and kill Tamil civilians. After the end of the war the Rajapaksa government claimed it took steps to control the illegal activities of these groups. But, the government security establishment provided weapons and other assistance directly and indirectly to Pillayan group when it confronted another paramilitary group led by Douglas Devananda in 2008 in Batticaloa.

EPDP cadre Kaliappan Gnanaseelan who was associating with the Vaazhaichcheanai army camp in 2008 was abducted and later killed by Pilliayan group. EPDP retaliated by abducting and killing a TMVP person, Thevathas Sureshkumar from Aa’ndaanku’lam in Chengkaladi. His body was buried in the compound of EPDP paramilitary office and recovered in a search conducted by the SL police and Pilliayan group. The government didn’t wish to give operational space to Douglas Devananda by encouraging Chandrakanthan.

Now the same Pilliayan group is targeted by the Colombo government. The Police arrested on May 11 Edwin Krishnanandarajah alias ‘Pradeep master’, a councilor in the EPC on an allegation that he was responsible for the killing of  Rasamanikkam Mathialagan, the SLFP local organizer in Batticaloa and a close associate of Muralitharan. ‘Pradeep master’ was taken to Colombo by the C.I.D. for further interrogation.

The SL Police also searched the residence of Mohan, owner of the Chengkaladi Selvam Cinema, who is a close associate of Chandrakanthan.

Within seventy two hours of the killing of Karuna associate, ‘unidentified persons’ shot dead Ilankumaran, an owner of a liquor shop at Ka’luvaagnchik-kudi and a close associate of Pilliayan
