He said that the TGTE’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. Kanaganthram Manickavasagar, and Spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, Jeyaprakash Jeyalingam, represented TGTE in the official Independence Day ceremony,

These TGTE representatives joined other government representatives to witness the birth of the newest nation, said the spokesperson. According to BBC*, the official ceremonies began with the Speaker of the South Sudan Legislative Assembly, James Wani Igga, reading the Proclamation of Independence. This was followed by the lowering of Sudan ’s national flag and raising of the new Republic of South Sudan Flag as trumpets played the new national anthem, BBC reported.

BBC also reported that, President Salva Kiir signed the Constitution and took the oath of office to become the first president of the Republic of South Sudan and said “Our martyrs did not die in vein….We have waited for more than 56 years for this day. It is a day that will be forever engraved on our hearts and minds.”

The TGTE Prime Minister, Mr. Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran in his message stated that “Eelam Tamils can clearly understand the joy of Southern Sudanese becoming free people and can share their happiness. The TGTE and the people of Tamil Eelam express their heartiest wishes to the people of South Sudan on their liberation. We salute them for their sacrifices to become free and admire their courage and determination."

TGTE representatives were interviewed by South Sudan Radio, said the spokesperson. In addition to attending the Independence Day celebrations the TGTE delegation remains in South Sudan exploring and discussing, with the new Government, possibilities of assisting South Sudan in their development efforts through Tamil Diaspora expertise in selected fields, continued the spokesperson.

TGTE’s delegation also met several foreign government delegations who were attending the independence celebrations and brief them on the similarities of the Eelam Tamil issue and that of South Sudan, said the spokesperson. They also gave details of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Sri Lankan government against Eelam Tamils, continued the spokesperson.

The relationship with Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) and TGTE is nothing new, said the spokesperson. SPLM sent its Secretary General for the United States , Mr. Domach Wal Ruach, to speak at TGTE’s inaugural event held in Philadelphia in May 2009. On that occasion, he spoke of the similarities between the independence struggle of Tamil Eelam and that of South Sudan . He also spoke of the challenges facing freedom struggles and expressed their solidarity with Eelam Tamils, continued the spokesperson.

TGTE is calling upon the international community for an internationally supervised referendum in Eelam, like the one held in South Sudan, said the spokesperson. Eelam Tamils have already spoken loud and clear during the Parliamentary elections in 1977, when they overwhelmingly voted for an independent state of Tamil Eelam, he elaborated. This democratic expression of Eelam Tamils clearly indicated the preferred position of the Tamils. It is also emphasized that given the genocide of Tamils seen in the final stages of the war in 2009, the Tamil claim for an independent state gains more justification as a remedy that ensures their very physical survival, continued the spokesperson.

The TGTE is a democratically elected Government of the Tamil diaspora from the island of Sri Lanka . TGTE held internationally supervised elections in 12 countries to elect Members of Parliament (MPs). These MPs drafted and ratified a Constitution, elected a Prime Minister, Speaker, and a 10 member Cabinet.
