President Rajapaksa would be well advised to distance himself swiftly from his brother Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, said The Hindu in its editorial on Tuesday. The problem is not the brother but the confidence the Colombo regime gets from the stand of the big brother in New Delhi, is the opinion of political observers and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms. Jayalalitha. The Hindu now scapegoats ‘Gotabhaya brother’ as a last resort to bail out Rajapaksa, New Delhi establishment and all those who contributed to genocide in the island, political observers in Chennai said. The Hindu could have contributed to pre-empt genocide had its journalism confuted the big brothers in New Delhi and Washington and appealed to the masses in India and outside by telling the truth about the intentions of state in the island, the political observers further said.
The editorial of The Hindu on Tuesday lamented that Sri Lanka taking “only nominal steps” towards political solution is a matter of concern even to friends of Sri Lanka, such as India, which stood by its military efforts against the LTTE.
Tamil politicians are of the opinion that there are not even “nominal steps” but on the contrary systematic acts of structural genocide.
The Hindu finds it “shocking” that Gotabhaya refuses to address the Channel 4 and UN panel report revelations on the killing of civilians and captives and on possible sexual assault. The Hindu was present in the war front on the side of the SL Army. It was in a better position than the UN panel and Channel 4 in bringing out the truth to the world.
The Hindu attacked Gotabhaya for trashing political solution. Mahinda Rajapaksa was telling more or less the same thing and his interviews taken by Mr. N. Ram repeatedly appeared in The Hindu in positive ways.
Gotabhaya’s comment on Thamizh Vaa’ni is a typical example of the chauvinistic attitude with which state was dealing with Tamils for ages.
“For this statement alone, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa must be taken to task,” says The Hindu editorial titled “A brother out of control.”
The attitude behind such statements will never cease to exist as long as the national question of the two nations in the island is viewed as mere majority-minority issue as viewed by The Hindu’s editorial Tuesday, Eezham Tamil politicians in the island commented.
