AIADMK slams Karunanidhi for Lord Rama remark

Quoting DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s controversial remarks against Lord Rama over the Sethusamudram issue, the ruling AIADMK on Thursday sought to hit back at him on the issue of a new assembly complex built during his regime, wondering whether he possessed an engineering degree.

Referring to former deputy chief minister MK Stalin’s past remarks that his father Karunanidhi was associated with the construction of the new assembly-cum-secretariat complex brick by brick, AIADMK member S Valarmathy during a debate in the assembly asked, "Does it mean Karunanidhi possesses an engineering degree?"

The AIADMK government has stopped construction activity on the new complex pending an inquiry into "alleged irregularities" in the Rs 1,000 crore project after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced she will continue to work from the centuries-old Fort St George citing administrative reasons.

Jayalalithaa had made it clear that she will not make the complex, inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in March 2010.

At the height of the controversy over the Sethusamudram shipping channel project, Karunanidhi, responding to pleas against demolition of Ramasethu believed to have been built by Lord Rama to cross over to Sri Lanka, had sarcastically remarked if Lord Rama was a civil engineer and "from which engineering college did he graduate".
