European delegation to evaluate Sri Lanka’s Commonwealth Games bid

A European delegation arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday for a review mission that could further the island nation’s bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, an official statement said on Tuesday.

Hambantota on the South-western coast of Sri Lanka is bidding for the games along with Gold Coast in Australia. The city has received significant investment including a 500 million U.S. dollar port funded by China.

The visit is the third in a series of regional inward missions by Commonwealth members ahead of the vote to decide the host city at the Commonwealth Games Federation general assembly in St Kitts and Nevis on November 11, 2011, organizers said in a statement.

Next week it welcomes a delegation from Oceania ahead of a final visit from Asia in October.

As the race to host the event reaches its final stages, the Hambantota 2018 bid is looking to impress with plans described as ‘visionary, exciting and unique’ by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Evaluation Commission.
