Resettled people struggle for survival in Paduvaankarai

Resettled uprooted people in villages in Paduvaankarai region in Batticaloa district have started moving out to urban areas as they are not provided with basic and livelihood facilities, according to civil sources in Paduvaankarai. The people of Paduvaankarai were driven out from their houses following the military offensive by the Sri Lanka Army in 2006-2007. After the resettlement they once again lost everything they possessed in two floods, one in December in 2010 and the second in 2011 January-February.

Sri Lankan Government Agent for Batticaloa district, Suntharam Arumainayagam, declared already in 2010 that resettlement of all uprooted people from villages in seven Divisional Secretariat divisions in Paduvaankarai region had been completed.

But uprooted people from villages, Poa’ratheevup-pattu, Vellaave’li, Vavu’natheevu, Chengkaladi and Ea’raavoorpattu were resettled without being provided with basic and livelihood facilities. They lost their properties and personal belongings due to artillery and air attacks by the government forces.

“Now we have nothing in our possession for our survival. Hence we decided to move out of these villages to urban areas with the hope of finding alternate way for our existence” said one of them.
