Establish International Protection Mechanism to Protect Tamils: TGTE

Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) calls for the establishment of an International Protection Mechanism to Protect Tamils in the island of Sri lanka. Declared Year 2012 as International Investigation Year.

December 28, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ — Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) calls for the establishment of an International Protection Mechanism to Protect Tamils in the island of Sri lanka. Declared Year 2012 as International Investigation Year.

TGTE’s third Parliamentary Session took place in Buffalo, New York, from December 14th to 17th 2011. The city of Buffalo was the last stop on the Underground Railroad for escaping slaves from United States to Canada. While Buffalo evoked the feelings about freedom for those present at the main venue, other TGTE Members of Parliament participated via video link from Paris and London.

During the sitting a discussion paper on the need for an International Protection Mechanism was presented, highlighting the continuing structural genocide, colonization, extra-judicial killings and sexual assault against the Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka. This paper was followed by a resolution passed unanimously by the TGTE Assembly calling on the UN Secretary-General to create an International Protection Mechanism for Eelam Tamils living in the island of Sri Lanka to guarantee their physical security and protect their Tamil national identity.

An International Protection Mechanism would be a deterrent to human rights violations and minimize the threat of violence – including sexual assault – which many Eelam Tamils are currently subject to on a daily basis.

In a related move, the Assembly also passed a resolution declaring 2012 as an international investigation year. A third resolution passed by the TGTE Assembly calls for the release of the death row prisoners Perarivalan, Murugan and Santhan.

The Assembly took up lengthy discussions on papers "A Roadmap to Realize the TGTE Goal", "Colonization of the Tamil Homeland" and "The Establishment of a Transnational Tamil Economic Chamber".

The sitting members of the Assembly had the opportunity to welcome its newest Members of Parliament from South Africa and India. This was seen as a milestone and an indication that the world Tamils were rallying behind TGTE. Appearance at this sitting of members of the African National Congress and former British Parliamentarians as well as messages received from leaders of British political parties were further indications of the serious building of TGTE’s soft power.

The Assembly sessions in Buffalo also saw the launching of TGTE’s official news website www.naathamnews.com

Coinciding with the Parliamentary Sessions, the newly formed Panel on the Prosecution and Prevention of Genocide convened their sessions and discussed innovative ways of establishing Genocide through international and domestic forums as well as establishing people’s tribunals in various countries. TGTE’s Advisory Committee also met and took up several emerging issues of a management kind.

Strategic sessions were held late into the night about the upcoming 2012 Human Rights Council Session and concerning the prevention and prosecution of Genocide.

TGTE ministries presented their activities to date and their planned activities for the coming year. These reports are available on the TGTE website.

During the penultimate day of the session the members of the assembly witnessed an incredible act of generosity. An Eelam Tamil mother, who lives in New York and was attending the session, donated her "thaali kodi" to the TGTE. In her statement to the assembly explaining her gift she quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who said

"The day we see the truth and cease to speak is the day we begin to die".

It is in that spirit that the TGTE thanks her and the rest of our friends who have the courage to stand with us and lend their voices so that we may achieve the dream of an independent and sovereign state of Tamil Eelam together.
