Foreign experts to assist SL’s bid to expand continental shelf

The government will obtain the assistance of five international experts   to assist the Ministry of External Affairs to prepare oral presentations to be made to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) scheduled for the second half of 2012.

The legal and technical experts have been named as Dr Harold Brekker, Dr. Oude Elferink, Mr. C.W. Pinto, Dr. Bernard Oxman and Dr. Woods, the Government’s news website said.

Sri Lanka is making the submission in a bid to establish county’s outer limits of the Continental Shelf beyond the present 200 nautical miles.

United Nations Convention on the law of the sea required state parties to submit geological and scientific data and other material to the Commission.
