TID arrests two Tamil fishermen in Mannaar

A group of persons, arriving in a white van and identifying themselves as from the Sri Lankan ‘Terrorism Investigation Division’ (TID), arrested two Tamil fishermen in Mannaar on January 19th, sources in Mannaar said. The TID officers had later had informed relatives of the fishermen after inquiry that TID police had detained the fishermen on reports that they had helped he LTTE.

28 year-old newly married, Alex Thavaseelan of Pa’l’lmunai, and 48 year-old Joseph Gnanaseelan, father of five children of Amman Koyail-Uppuk-ku’lam in Mannaar district, were arrested according to complaints lodged with the Vavuniyaa regional office of the International Committee of Red cross(ICRC) by their relatives.

Gnanaseelan has been detained in the Fourth Floor of the TID Headquarters in Colombo and Alex Thavaseelan in Vavuniyaa TID office.

Later on January 21 houses of the Tamil fishermen and their relatives were searched by the TID officials.
