Legal action on some websites

website-image-495x398 The government is contemplating legal action against some websites which had published defamatory articles on President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family.

Acting Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told reporters today that he had submitted a report to President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday regarding some websites.

The Minister said that while newspapers and the electronic media in Sri Lanka can be monitored, it is difficult to do the same on the various websites which publish articles on Sri Lanka.

He said most of these websites which are not registered with the Media Ministry violate media ethics and the media culture.

The Minister said that appropriate action will be taken against these websites and subsequently legal action will also be considered.

Meanwhile Yapa also condemned the actions of Minister Mervyn Silva for threatening journalists through the media.
