Deported asylum seekers jailed

asylum-495x313 A group of failed asylum seekers who were deported from Australia have been produced in court and remanded, the police media unit said today.

The police said that six of the 30 asylum seekers were produced before the Negambo magistrate yesterday and remanded till the 20th of this month.

The other 24 failed asylum seekers are to be produced in court today. The CID is conducting investigations.

The Sri Lankan nationals were deported on a charter flight to Colombo from Christmas Island yesterday.

The Australian High Commission in Colombo said yesterday the 30 single adult males had arrived in Australia on a number of boats over the last week or so.

“The government is committed to breaking the people smuggling trade and preventing people from taking these dangerous boats to Australia. We will continue to regularly transfer people to Nauru and shortly to Manus Island. And where appropriate, the government will certainly continue to return people where they do not engage Australia’s international obligations,” the Australian High Commission said.

Since 13 August, 156 Sri Lankans have returned home from Australia – both voluntarily and involuntarily – as people realise that these smugglers only sell lies and false promises about what awaits people in Australia, the High Commission said.
