Slain EPDP councillor’s sister receives death threat

The president of Nedun-theevu (Delft) civic council, Daniel Rexian alias Rajeev of the EPDP was shot and killed in November 2013. His sister, Ms Regina, a key witness in the case, is now being threatened by unidentified persons alleged to be EPDP operatives aligned with Mr Kamal Kamalendran, the Jaffna District organizer of the EPDP and the opposition leader, who is one of the persons detained for alleged involvement in the killing. The SL police in Ooraath-thu’rai (Kayts) has refused to register her complaints.

Three persons, including the opposition leader of the NPC, Rexian’s wife, his driver have been detained by the SL Police following Regina’s witness statement, informed sources said.

Mr Kamalendran has been refusing to step down from the post of the opposition leader and has been attending the sittings of the NPC.

SL Minister and EPDP leader Mr Douglas Devananda has been promoting Mr Thavarsa to the opposition leader position, and the party leadership has opted to suspend Kamalendran from the EPDP, sources close to the EPDP said.

When the journalists in Jaffna questioned the SL Police in Jaffna on Ooraath-thu’rai police refusing to register a complaint by Regina, the SSP at Jaffna Police Station responded by stating that she could approach them to lodge her complaint, news sources in Jaffna said.
