Gampaha police arrest 14 Tamil civilians

Sri Lanka Police, with the assistance of home guards, Saturday arrested 14 Tamil residents during a search operation conducted in several parts of the Gampaha town and its suburbs. The police said the arrested residents were taken in for questioning as they failed to prove their identity and to justify their presence in the location. However, civil sources said the arrested Tamils have been working in buisness establishements in Gampaha for several years.

Most of the arrested are from north, east and upcountry plantations.

Police said that the arrested are being held in several police stations in Gampaha district and will be produced in Court Monday. The questioning will have been completed by then, according to the police.
The operation was conducted two days after the arrest at Gampaha railway station of 11 Tamil youths who were travelling in Yaldevi train to Colombo from Vavuniya.
