Rajapaksa government rejects UNP request to summon parliament

The United Peoples Freedom Alliance government led by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa Tuesday rejected an appeal made by the main opposition United National Party (UNP) to summon the parliament immediately before the end of the year which is in recess to hold discussion on the current fuel crisis following the order of the SL Supreme Court.

The Rajapaksa government would not summon the parliament as requested by the UNP.

The parliament would meet on January 6 as scheduled and not before that date, said Mr.Mahinda Yapa Abeyawardene, the Lankan Media Minister Tuesday evening addressing a media briefing

UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe Monday wrote a letter to the Prime Minister Ratnasri Wickremanayake to summon the parliament immediately.

The government has not yet reduced the price of petrol to Rs: 100/= per litre as directed by the Supreme Court. This has created a shortage of petrol in the country.
