The General Council of the ruling DMK party today passed a resolution urging the Centre to immediately send External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Colombo and persuade the Lankan government to end the war on Tamils, forcing a ceasefire.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who was elected as party president for a record tenth time, speaking on the resolution indirectly criticised the Centre for not acting on its ‘promise to him’ to send the External Affairs Minister to bring about the ceasefire.
”When I met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on December 4 he assured me that Mr Pranab Mukherjee would be sent to Colombo on this mission”, he recalled.
But the Centre does not seem to have acted on this with the briskness expected of it, he pointed out.
