17 LTTE rebels killed in fresh Lanka clashes

Advancing Sri Lankan troops killed at least 17 LTTE rebels as they gear to flush out the Tigers from last few pockets in the ‘No Fire Zone’, even as reports said that the Tamil guerrillas may still possess a Czezh made light aircraft.

Lankan forces have recovered eight light aircraft bombs, officials said on Sunday. A Czech made Zlin Z 143 light aircraft may still be left with the LTTE contrary to the reports that it had no more aircraft after losing two of them last month.

Intercepted LTTE radio transmissions revealed that 17 LTTE cadres were killed and 22 others suffered injuries in fresh clashes.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan soldiers were just 700m to 800m short of the bridge on the A-35 road (Paranthan- Mullaittivu) at Vellaimullaivaikkal on Saturday night, defence sources said.

Troops after a daylong march along the A-35 axis readjusted their forward boundary that extends across A-35 to the northern bank of the Nanthikadal lagoon.
