Students of schools used as SLA detention centres in Jaffna affected

The students of the schools in Jaffna district, converted into Sri Lanka Army (SLA) detention centres, are forced to continue their studies in private education centres, private buildings and schools located near the SLA detention centres, sources in Jaffna said. The reopening of all schools in Jaffna district had been postponed for a week they being used by SLA to detain the civilians from Vanni. Though other schools reopened Monday for the second term the children of the schools used as SLA detention centres could find alternate places for studies only Tuesday, the sources added.

Meanwhile, SLA authorities in Mirusuvil had refused to permit UNICEF to construct temporary classrooms for the children held in Mirusuvil Roman Catholic Church detention centre in a place selected by UNICEF along with Education Officials in Jaffna and with the approval of SLA High Command in Jaffna.

UNICEF had to relocate the construction of the classrooms to a place selected next to the Mirusuvil detention centre which is under the full control of the SLA.

UNICEF has begun constructing temporary school sheds for the children in the SLA detention centres located in Kaithadi, in a government land selected by SLA, centrally placed to three of its camps.

Palmyra Development Board building, Saiva Children Home and Jaffna University Chiththa medical college hostel in Kaithadi have been converted into SLA detention centres to confine civilians brought from Vanni by SLA.
