DMK member pleads for release of Indian fishermen

A DMK member on Wednesday urged the government to ensure the release of Indian fishermen from Sri Lankan custody saying the fishing community in southern Tamil Nadu had gone on strike to protest such acts of the Sri Lankan Navy.

Noting that the latest arrest of 21 fishermen and seizure of five boats was the third such incident in over a month, film star-turned MP J K Ritheesh said the fishermen in his constituency of Ramanathapuram and the fisheries business had gone on strike due to such arrests on a "regular" basis.

He also urged the government to ask the Indian Navy to release the Sri Lankan fishermen and their boats taken into custody in the recent past.
