Grenade attack on UNP district office in Batticaloa

Unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade Sunday around 10:40 p.m on the United National Party (UNP) office located in the residence of UNP Batticaloa district branch president and member of Eastern Provincial Council, Arasaratnam Sasitharan, Batticaloa police said. None was injured in the blast but the office has been damaged a little.

The office has been opened in order to engage in canvassing for the common opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka in the presidential election on January 26.

UNP Deputy president Karu Jayasuriya had paid a visit Friday to the above office where he held a meeting with the party organizers and activists.

Two persons from Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMV) of Vavu’natheevu had joined the UNP in the presence of Karu Jayasuriya.
