Deposit money to contest in the forthcoming general election was paid by two independent groups Thursday and Friday in the presence of Assistant Election Officer (AEO) in Jaffna Secretariat. Deposit money and list of candidates can be submitted until 26 noon and those tendered later will be rejected, AEO Jaffna, P. Kugathasan said.
Deposit money on behalf of Shanmuganathan Manoharan from Chaavakachcheari was paid at Jaffna Secretariat election office Thursday while deposit money for Sangaralingam Sathiyaseelan was paid Friday.
Independent groups have to pay a sum of 24,000 rupees at the rate of 2000 rupees each for the 12 contestants in a group.
Registered political parties are exempted from paying deposit money, according to the AEO.
Many independent groups are expected to contest the parliamentary election in Jaffna district, sources in Jaffna said.
