324 candidates contest Jaffna electorate for 9 seats

Until Friday noon 15 registered political parties and 12 independent groups had submitted their lists of candidates to contest parliamentary election in Jaffna district electorate competing for nine seats for Jaffna electorate, sources in Jaffna said. Meanwhile, the nomination lists of Sri Lanka National Front political party and four independent groups were rejected by Jaffna Assistant Commissioner of Elections, the sources added.
The following political parties selected the following symbols to contest:

  • Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal – boat
  • Tamil Arasuk Kadchi – house
  • United People’s Freedom Alliance – betel leaf
  • All Ceylon Tamil Congress –bicycle
  • United National Party – elephant
  • Socialist Equality Party – scissors
  • Elloarum Makkal, Elloarum Mannar party – saving box
  • Janatha Peramuna – tractor
  • Eelavar Democratic Front – plough
  • United Socialist Party – tricycle
  • Leftist Freedom Front – umbrella
  • Democratic National Alliance – cup
  • Pathmanaba Eela Makkal Revolutionary Freedom Front with Peoples Liberation of Tamil Eelam – candle
  • Tamil United Liberation Front – rising sun
  • Democratic United Front – double leaf

The nomination lists submitted by the independent groups led by Gnanapragasam Sithamparanathan, Murugesu Nadesalingam, Murugan Kumaravel, Ms. Subathira Thevathasan were rejected.
