SL Supreme Court: Voting rights of IDPs should be ensured

Sri Lankan Supreme Court Thursday directed that the rules and regulation laid down by the SL Elections Commissioner pertaining to the voting rights of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) during the presidential election be implemented fully.

The three member bench comprised Chief Justice Asoka de Silva and Justices Jagath Balapatebendige and Ms Chandra Ekanayake made the order when it took up the Fundamental Rights violation petition of the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) was taken up for inquiry, legal sources said.

Presidential Counsel K.Kanag Eswaran appeared for the petitioner submitted to court that during the January presidential election, a large number of internally displaced people were deprived of their franchise due to lack of transport facilities.
