No development in Jaffna worthy of mention – German delegation

A delegation of German MPs led by Ms. Petra Ernstberger visited Jaffna accompanied by German Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mr. Jens Ploetner and Mr. Guido Baumann, officer in charge of press affairs. Mr. Guido Bauman, at the end of the visit Thursday, told local press that the delegation saw no development worthy of mention in Jaffna. He added that the main intention of the delegation was to find out how the German tax payers’ money given as donation is being used in Jaffna peninsula. Mr. Holger Ortel, Mr. Jurgen Kilmke and Dr. Birgit Reinemund were the three German other parliamentarians besides Ms. Petra Ernstberger visiting Jaffna.

The German delegation first visited Jaffna Municipal Council where its members had talks with the councilors. The Mayor of Jaffna and the Deputy Mayor were not present during the talks. The members of the delegation had been disappointed, sources in Jaffna said.

Later, the delegation met Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians in the German Technical Coopertation (GTZ) lodge where TNA key persons including Sritharan MP, K. Stiampalam and C. V. K. Sivagnanam had discussions with the members of the delegation.

TNA delegation told media that the German team of parliamentarians had come to learn the true situation prevailing in North at first hand.

Meanwhile, Guido Baumann said that the German delegation has the need to find out the needs of the Tamils in the postwar situation.

He added that a German Technical College in Jaffna, similar to the ones in Moratuwa and Batticaloa is under consideration.

The delegation paid a visit to Jaffna Bishop House Thursday evening where they held talks with a group led by Rt. Rev. Thomas Saundaranayagam, the Bishop of Jaffna before leaving to Colombo.

On the way to Jaffna the delegation had met Northern Province Governor, Major Gen. G. A. Chandrasiri in Vavuniyaa Wednesday but had not met Jaffna Government Agent during its visit to Jaffna.
