Local Government elections scheduled for March

The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to hold the Local Government election in March 2011, according to the pro-Government Sinhala daily Lankadeepa newspaper. The government has taken a decision to dissolve the local government bodies in January next year and hold elections in March, Lankadeepa added.

The election has already been postponed by a year.

Although the Local Government Elections were to be held by April, it was postponed due to both the Presidential Election and General Elections being held early this year.

A total of 288 local bodies, comprising municipal councils, urban councils and pradeshiya sabhas will be dissolved accordingly.
