‘Resist to the end,’ advised Obama-Clinton administration’s envoy to the Egyptian dictator Mubarak who is currently facing democracy uprising from the people of Egypt. "President Mubarak’s continued leadership is critical: it’s his opportunity to write his own legacy,” said Frank Wisner, a retired diplomat of the US State Department, now sent as an envoy by Obama to meet Mubarak, reports Robert Fisk writing in The Independent, Monday. In February 2009, when Eezham Tamils and their fighters were surrounded by the genocidal military of Sri Lanka, another former US State Department official Bennett Ramberg wanted the war to be ‘finished to the end.’ “Ethnic civil wars end more durably when there is a decisive military victory,” he said. Yet another former US diplomat Armitage recently went to Colombo reportedly to bail out Rajapaksa.
Simultaneous to Bennett Ramberg ‘advising’ in the US based International Herald Tribune on 27 February 2009 that “The Obama administration should heed the lessons of history,” the UN Secretariat indirectly nodded to ‘finish to the end’ in the war against Eezham Tamils.
“It appears that the UN Secretariat’s public call is undermined by a more private green light to the Sri Lankan military’s offensive in north Sri Lanka”, reported Inner City Press on 27 February 2009.
A few months before, in November 2008, encouraging the genocidal military of Colombo and hinting on what it should do, the US Pacific Commander Admiral Timothy Keating said:
“I am confident the Sri Lankan military has very best intentions in the world."
"We are assured and gratified by the progress that the Sri Lankan military is making, and I think, the Sri Lankan military would be the first to admit that there is work to be done."
When hundreds of thousands Eezham Tamils took to streets across the world, demanding an end to the war and recognition of their long due political rights, the West refused to heed to it and tried to project the uprising as something ‘orchestrated’ by the ‘terrorists’.
Some among the Eezham Tamils argued at that time that it was the ‘symbols’ the Eezham Tamils were displaying that made the West not to listen to them.
What symbols now displayed by the democracy-seekers of Egypt that make the guardians of democracy to advise the dictator to resist to the end, ask diaspora Tamil political activists.
Mr. Frank Wisner, who was sent as a special envoy of Obama to Egypt, now claims that he made the remarks on Egypt in a “personal capacity.”
But there is nothing "personal" about Mr Wisner’s connections with the litigation firm Patton Boggs, which openly boasts that it advises "the Egyptian military, the Egyptian Economic Development Agency, and has handled arbitrations and litigation on the [Mubarak] government’s behalf in Europe and the US,” says Robert Fisk writing from Cairo, asking “why on earth was he sent to talk to Mubarak, who is in effect a client of Mr Wisner’s current employers?
It is inconceivable Hillary Clinton did not know of his employment by a company that works for the very dictator which Mr Wisner now defends in the face of a massive democratic opposition in Egypt, Fisk points out.
Mr. Wisner was earlier a US career diplomat who served the State Department for 36 years as US ambassador to Egypt, Zambia, the Philippines and India under eight American presidents.
The attorneys of the law corporate, Patton Boggs, for which Wisner works since last two years, "represent some of the leading Egyptian commercial families and their companies" and "have been involved in oil and gas and telecommunications infrastructure projects on their behalf".
One of its partners served as chairman of the US-Egyptian Chamber of Commerce promoting foreign investment in the Egyptian economy.
The company has also managed contractor disputes in military-sales agreements arising under the US Foreign Military Sales Act. Washington gives around $1.3bn (£800m) a year to the Egyptian military.
“Wisner has been sent to Cairo by Obama at the behest of Hillary,” says Nicholas Noe, an American political researcher now based in Beirut.
According to the law firm, Patton Boggs, Wisner has been employed by it to use his expertise in the Middle East and India to assist its American and international clients.
The vast network of companies with family connections to Mubarak’s regime is, of course, one of the targets of the pro-democracy demonstrators in Egypt, says Fisk adding that, “We still do not know exactly what kind of "expertise" he has bestowed upon the dictator of Egypt. But his remarks at the weekend leave no room to doubt he advised the old man to cling on to power for a few more months.”
“The US is now subcontracting or ‘privatising’ crisis management,” says Nicholas Noe, cited by Fisk.
Eezham Tamils need to investigate the background of Armitage mission to Rajapaksa in this light, commented a diaspora activist engaged in legal pursuits of the struggle of Eezham Tamils.
The fundamental problem is that the public in the USA and in the West is not as awakened as it was in the times of the Vietnam War. Their own freedom depends very much on their ability to come out of the illusions created by the establishments and in showing their care for the democracy of others in a spirited way, to bring an end to the global anti-democratic attitude of the establishments, the activist further said.
