CPI holds demonstrations across India in support of Eezham Tamils

The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday observed an “all-India solidarity day with the Sri Lankan Tamils” and held countrywide demonstrations, highlighting the Tamils’ cause and calling on India to uphold their legitimate rights and finding a speedy political solution, The Hindu newspaper reported.that demonstrations were held in 25 state capitals and other places. In New Delhi, where the local unit of Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK joined the CPI protest, senior CPI leaders – general secretary A.B. Bardhan, national secretary D. Raja and deputy general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy and Thenkaasi MP T. Lingam — participated and sought justice for the Tamils.

CPI_Delhi_prot_02_94228_200 Mr. Bardhan asked why the Government of India was silent on the “massacre” of thousands of Tamils by the Sri Lankan army during the civil war, whilst the Foreign Ministers of the United Kingdom and France, and the United Nations Secretary-General had spoken out.

The CPI would take up the issue in the coming monsoon session of Parliament and put pressure on the Centre, he said.

Mr. Raja accused the Indian government of adopting “double standards” and following a “flawed foreign policy” on Sri Lanka.

CPI_Delhi_prot_01_94224_200 He demanded the Sri Lankan government to provide proper devolution of powers to the Tamils and take steps for their rehabilitation and early return to their homes, as well as a fair trial relating to all the war crimes.
